Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has an idea about how artificial intelligence could make films ‘better.’
In the first-quarter earnings call on Thursday, Sarandos said that he believes the real opportunity for AI in film production would be to make the films “10 percent better, not 50 percent cheaper.” Sarandos also cited recent comments that filmmaker James Cameron made about how the technology could cut production costs in half.
Sarandos also mentioned what they could use AI tools for, which included “set references, pre-vis, VFX sequence prep, shot planning,” and “all kinds of things today that kind of make the process better.”
Sarandos used the 2019 film The Irishman with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as an example of what AI could be used for. Director Martin Scorsese used VFX de-aging effects for the two main characters showing them over the years. Sarandos explained this process could’ve been eased with AI. Other shots that could’ve been eased with AI include the stand-ins for the late Paul Walker and Carrie Fisher.
Some smaller films have already used AI to their advantage, with 2022’s The Safe Zone. Creator Richard Juan used ChatGPT (just seven days after launch, too) to write the script, but also provide specific camera movements, lighting, and even the wardrobe. OpenAI’s image generator DALL-E was also used to generate storyboards.
However, even the smaller screens have struggled with the reception of AI-generated films. London’s Prince Charles Cinema received backlash for their showing of the film The Last Screenwriter, which resulted in the theatre cancelling the screening of the film.
