Stellantis has shared that it’s working with Factorial on a new solid-state EV battery that can reportedly charge a car from 15 to 90 percent in just 18 minutes. And the testing is going so well that the company plans to implement them in a suite of demo vehicles to show off in 2026.
Of course, this insane charging speed is in ideal temperatures, but if this breakthrough comes to market, it could significantly speed up the time it takes for electric cars to fill up.
These solid-state batteries have been talked about for a long time, and various other manufacturers are also working to bring them to market. They’re more dense than a traditional lithium-ion battery, meaning they can hold more energy and charge faster.
Sellantis says it has tested the new 77Ah FEST cells with over 600 charging cycles, a milestone for solid-state battery technology. The company also shared that these batteries can provide more power output as well, which could increase the performance of a vehicle if used correctly.
Factorial has also tested the batteries under extreme temperatures, and they continue to work in -30 degrees and as hot as 45 degrees outside.
The Verge notes that Hyundai is also an investor in Factorial and plans to have at least semi-solid-state batteries on the road in 2026 as well. There are lots of other Western automakers looking to implement solid-state batteries by at least 2028, but so far, all of them appear to be lagging behind Chinese innovation. CATL and BYD have been hyping up new EVS that can charge in around five minutes, which would blow these new solid-state batteries out of the water if true.
