A new sports lesson app called TeachMe.To has been expanding across North America and it’s launching in Toronto in time for summer.
The app is essentially Taskrabbit, but for sports lessons. You search for a sport that you want to learn, and the app will provide you with a list of coaches. You can select one to book a session. TeachMe is relatively new and has been operating in Toronto in beta for a while, but now it’s open to all residents.
You can also browse a local map to see coaches and facilities near you. Ideally, this app will take off amongst other sports like disc golf, hockey, soccer, and others, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s mostly tennis and pickleball in the greater Toronto area. There are two golf coaches as well, and I expect that will get larger as the summer comes around.
The real draw of this app is that it lets you get a sense of your coach before you book them. They have a Tinder-esque profile that lets you learn about them and watch a short introductory video of that person. This is also a good way to easily get private lessons in a sport. You can also book multiple lesson packs if you want to sign up for a month or more at a time.
To start, each user is gifted one free lesson, and the lessons after are covered by a money-back guarantee. Since this startup is so new, I’d expect these to work without issue, but as companies get larger, like Airbnb and Uber, these offers become harder to redeem.
If you want to provide lessons, you can also sign up for the app as a coach. Once you make a profile, you can start getting clients.
