If you spotted someone on a date with an actual robot in Toronto, you can thank Tinder’s new marketing strategy to try and cut down on bots.
Tinder has launched Face Check in Canada (outside of Quebec), which is designed to eliminate fake profiles and increase trust with the profiles people are connecting with.
The new feature requires users to take a mandatory video selfie that helps confirm with the service that the user is an actual person, and not a bot. Face Check compares your photos with those on your profile to prevent fake accounts and using someone else’s photos to catfish someone, a long-standing issue with online dating platforms.
To add some context, more than 65 per cent of dating app users are concerned about being catfished, with more than half already having been a victim of it, and some even losing money, according to ABC7 Chicago.
“Face Check is arriving in Canada at a time when online authenticity has never been more important,” says Yoel Roth, Senior Vice President of Trust & Safety at Match Group, Tinder’s parent company. “As dating apps become a bigger part of how Canadians meet, so too have concerns about fake profiles, impersonation, and online scams.”
Since releasing the feature to the general public, nearly 100 per cent of the active Tinder users in Canada have completed Face Check, and almost 90 per cent have earned the Photo Verified badge through the feature.
This isn’t the only feature Tinder has added in recent months, as they also released a new GPT-based AI game within the app to rank users’ flirting skills.
