The B.C. provincial government with help from the federal government as well, are planning to spend a total of $77 million to fund 15 internet projects across the province.
The federal government is also investing an additional $7 million to connect another 727 homes in the Spallumcheen and Hullcar areas. This funding will also add some cell service along the highway in that area.
The government press release says that the joint funding will bring high-speed internet to 6,900 homes, including 1,200 Indigenous households. Between all the funding projects that will mean 7,627 houses will get better internet soon.
Telus and CityWest will receive the funds to build the projects. The federal government also shared a breakdown of which company will handle which projects, and how much funding each project will receive.
The Canadian government’s fundingĀ comes from theĀ Universal Broadband Fund, which has spent $7.6 billion since its creationĀ in 2015.
The other parts of the funding came from the B.C. government’s plan in 2022 to connect all remaining B.C. homes to high-speed internet. The goal is to make sure that every home in the province is connected by 2030. This is the same goal as the federal government has for connecting all of Canada.
The release mentions that as of today, 95.8 per cent of Canadians have access to internet speeds of 50Mbps and above. The goal is to hit 98 per cent by 2026, and that will be a hard target to hit.
