It’s Always Sunny and Fargo creators making Far Cry TV series: report

The show is said to be an "anthology drama" following different stories each season

FX is developing a TV series based on Ubisoft’s popular Far Cry video games, according to a leak.

Eurogamer reports that Ubisoft had published a story on its own website announcing the show, only for it to quickly be removed. However, some Redditors had spotted the news before it was taken down.

In the blog post, Ubisoft confirmed that the series is being developed by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator Rob Mac and Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The former actually has a relationship with Ubisoft already, having co-created Mythic Quest, a co-production between the French gaming giant and Apple. Hawley, meanwhile, also created the fan-favourite Marvel series Legion and the recently-released Alien: Earth.

In the leaked blog post, Ubisoft describes the Far Cry series as an “anthology drama” in which each season is “set in a new world with a different cast of characters following the video game franchise’s signature standalone storytelling format.”

It’s a logical approach for an adaptation, given that each of the mainline Far Cry games have been standalone stories. However, it’s currently unclear whether each season would be inspired by a particular Far Cry game or if new stories and characters will be featured.

The last Far Cry game was 2021’s Far Cry 6 from Ubisoft Toronto, which stars Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito as the ruthless leader of a fictionalized take on Cuba. That said, the most acclaimed game in the series is 2012’s Ubisoft Montreal-developed Far Cry 3, featuring Montreal’s Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) as fan-favourite deranged pirate leader Vaas. Given that the Far Cry games already use the likeness of actors like Esposito and Mando, it remains to be seen whether they (or other stars) might reprise their roles in the live-action series.

In any event, a Far Cry series isn’t exactly surprising given Ubisoft’s broader push into adaptations. This includes an extensive partnership with Netflix that includes the already released Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, as well as an animated Splinter Cell series starring Liev Schrieber and live-action Assassin’s Creed series.
