The Canadian government is gearing up to auction off another slice of cellular spectrum early next year, but most carriers will need to start preparing immediately.
The spectrum auction has multiple deadlines. The first deadline is September 12, and anyone participating in the auction must submit any clarification questions about the upcoming spectrum before then.
The answers to those questions will then be published on October 10. Anyone who wants to participate can apply until December 2. The list of accepted participants will then be published on December 18.
The participants then have until January 27 to submit their sealed bids, and the announcement of which carrier gets which slice of spectrum will happen on February 6, 2026. The auction winners will need to submit 20 per cent of their payment on February 20, and the full payment must be made by March 20, 2026.
The full timeline is on the government’s website, where you can also read a breakdown of how the spectrum auction process works.
This could be a big auction for Videotron since it’s been working to establish itself as a larger player in the Canadian telecom space since buying Freedom Mobile after Rogers was forced to sell it off after buying Shaw.
