What to expect from the 2025 iPhone 17 event

It's iPhone 17 season, but we might get a lot more than that

apple fall iPhone awe dropping event

Unless the company does something surprising, this might be one of the leakiest Apple events of all time. There have been a ton of leaks outlining the next four iPhones, a few new watches and even a pair of AirPods Pros.

Upgrades to all new iPhones

Inside the glass screen, there is also speculation that all the new iPhones will use Apple’s Pro Motion display technology, which lets the displays range from 1Hz to 120Hz. Not only does the smoother screen enhance the new animations within Liquid Glass, but it should also allow all the new iPhones to have always-on displays, making them great clocks when charging in standby mode. Personally, I love the always-on display on the Pro iPhones, and I’ll be thrilled if it ends up on all iPhone 17 models.

That said, this is probably one of the most back-and-forth rumours this year, with some claiming that the 17 and 17 Air will only get 120Hz, not full Pro Motion with a variable refresh rate.

iPhone 17 Air

The most exciting development is the iPhone 17 Air, potentially, the biggest change we’ve seen to the iPhone formula in years. This phone should offer the same screen real estate as the iPhone 16 Plus, but it will be half as thick and only offer a single camera.

That said, it will also include Apple’s new C1 modem, which was introduced with the iPhone 16e, so we’re expecting good battery life, but not great. The other significant change for Canadians is that this will likely be the first iPhone sold globally that only accepts eSIM.

All in all, I think it will be the most exciting iPhone released this year, but buyers should be aware that while it’s going to be more comfortable to hold, it will likely cost more and have less screen-on time than the iPhone 17 that will launch alongside it. However, we’ll need to wait for the phone to get into the hands of the public before we can make a definitive statement.

iPhone 17 Pro

The iPhone 17 Pro series this year is going big on camera updates with a new chunkier camera bar along the top of the phone, which, in theory, will give the company more room to make lens upgrades. This leads to the other rumours suggesting that all three rear cameras on the iPhone will be capable of taking 48-megapixel shots with all three lenses, including the telephoto. This long lens is rumoured to be 8x this year instead of 5x as well.

The main upgrade I’m hoping for is a stronger, more scratch-resistant screen. A year later, my iPhone 16 models all got pretty crazy scratches, and my finacé’s iPhone 16 Pro looks like it’s been attacked by sandpaper. Rumours suggest Apple is going to make a better Ceramic Shield for the Pro phones this year.

The back of the phone might also change, with most of it made from aluminum, to allow the phone to discard waste heat more easily when performing powerful tasks. People also expect Apple to add a vapour chamber to the new phone to help with thermals.

That said, unlike the iPhone Air, there is a chance that the Pro models might get a little thicker to accommodate a larger battery. This is a hard one to judge until we are able to hold the phone in our hands and feel how it feels.

Regarding specs, the phone is expected to get an updated A-series chip that will become the new iPhone flagship in terms of power. There is also speculation that the antenna design will be slightly changed to help improve wireless signals going to and from the handset. We’re also expecting to see 12GB of RAM instead of the 8GB we saw previously.

We’ve seen a lot of bad renders and leaks, so take those shades with a grain of salt. However, it does seem like Apple is working on an orange/copper-coloured iPhone 17 Pro as well as grey, silver, and dark blue.  There was another leak that also suggested some kind of iridescent colour to go along with the glassy effects in iOS 26.

iPhone 17

For the first time in a long time, the iPhone 17 isn’t going to be paired with a Plus or mini model. This means the standard iPhone will stand alone with its specs this year. I’m sure it will use some of the same components as the iPhone 17 Air, like the A-series chip, and it seems likely the C1 Apple modem.

In terms of colours it looks like the phone will come in white and black alongside a dark grey, light green, lavendar, and light blue.

Other expected upgrades

Other products that are expected to be revealed are the Apple Watch SE3, Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra. This could be a big year for the SE, which will move up a chip class and support more features, likely the new watchOS gestures.

The Watch Ultra is rumoured to be a bit thinner than the old model and have a brighter, more energy-efficient display.

For AirPods lovers, there is supposed to be a new set of AirPods Pros that might have a smaller charging case and heart rate monitoring. Apple first released this tech earlier this year with the Powerbeats Pro 2.

However, all of this is based on leaks and rumours, so come back tomorrow afternoon to get all the news confirmed after the Apple event at 1pm ET. The event will be streamed on Apple’s website, YouTube channel and Apple TV app.
