The first teaser trailer for Hideo Kojima’s OD game for Xbox has been revealed.
During a special “Beyond the Strand” 10th anniversary event for his Kojima Productions studio, Kojima revealed more about the new horror title. In the “Knock” teaser trailer, we see a young woman (played by It star Sophia Lillis) lighting candles in an empty room, only for a mysterious figure to knock on the door, enter and grab her. The trailer also features a bunch of cryptic words interspersed with redactions. All in all, it’s reminiscent of the spooky vibes of P.T., the demo for Kojima’s Silent Hill reboot that Konami sadly cancelled.
Notably, this is the first proper trailer for OD after a tease at The Game Awards 2023 that included the reveal of stars Lillis, Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and Udo Kier (Hunters). Kojima said the game’s title refers to an exploration of “the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear.” During 2023 Game Awards, he also confirmed that Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele (Get Out) is co-writing the game with him.
Now, at the 10th anniversary event, Kojima elaborated on that collaboration, noting that he and Peele are tackling different kinds of fear in the game. One of the ones that Kojima himself is focusing on is the idea of “knocking,” as seen in the trailer, while he teased that Peele is handling something else.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer also showed up during the event to tease that OD is “innovating in gameplay, story, and player engagement,” with Kojima himself claiming the game is “totally different” from others on the market. Of course, we still haven’t seen actual gameplay footage, though, so it remains to be seen what, exactly, this even means.
We also don’t yet know when OD is set to release, especially since Kojima’s last game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, only just launched in June. Kojima is also working on another game, Physint, with PlayStation. During the Beyond the Strand event, he revealed a teaser image from Physint concealing the protagonist’s face, noting that he’s not yet ready to announce the actor portraying him. That said, he did confirm three other actors: Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Ma Dong-seok (Train to Busan), and Minami Hamabe (Godzilla Minus One).
Kojima has previously said that Physint will blur the lines between games and movies and return to the Metal Gear-esque world of “tactical espionage.” However, he noted during the anniversary event that Physint is still another “five or six years” away, suggesting a 2030 release at the earliest.
Other titles discussed in the event include an animated Death Stranding movie, the live-action A24 movie from Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One) and a mysterious AR project with Pokémon Go maker Niantic. The full nearly three-hour Beyond the Strand event can be viewed on YouTube.
