Recently, Microsoft started testing the ability to use video wallpapers on Windows 11. The feature has been spotted in the latest Windows 11 builds, and it allows users to set video files, such as MP4 or MKV, as the desktop wallpaper.
The videos will play every single time you view your desktop, similar to how third-party solutions like Wallpaper Engine do. To provide some context, Microsoft previously supported video wallpapers in Windows Vista through a feature called DreamScene, available in the Ultimate version of Vista. This feature was dropped when Microsoft moved over to Windows 7.
AsĀ The VergeĀ points out, video wallpapers have been a highly requested feature from users, with Wallpaper Engine being among Steam’s top 10 most-played games simply due to the number of people who have it running in the background.
The Washington-based software company had been testing dynamic animated wallpapers for Windows 11 for years, andĀ The VergeĀ noted that a former designer even revealed what they were supposed to look like early this year. The dynamic wallpapers were initially scheduled to ship in 2023, but were never included in the release version of Windows 11.
This latest change is another quality-of-life upgrade that Microsoft is adding to its operating system.Ā In late August, Microsoft introduced a handoff-like feature for Windows 11, enablingĀ users to open an app (such as Spotify) on their Android device and quickly launch it on their computer.
