Google is launching a new feature in Search called AI Mode, and it’s rolling out today in the U.S. AI Mode uses more advanced reasoning and modality, allowing you to go deeper and even ask follow-up questions.
AI Mode brings Gemini’s capabilities into Google Search, breaking down queries into subtopics and issuing various questions simultaneously on your behalf. Because of this, it’s letting you dive deeper than a regular search.
For instance, I asked AI Mode, “If I wanted to make tapioca, what would I need, and where can I get the ingredients?” AI Mode explained what tapioca was, where I could find tapioca starch, links to and locations of the closest stores, and their positions on a map. It also showed step-by-step details on how to make tapioca and tips like how to store it.
I followed up with how much it would cost and how to make it healthier. AI Mode explained affordable ways to get these ingredients and different bullet points on how to make it healthier. It also linked to different healthy bubble tea and tapioca pudding recipes and other notes.
Google will start graduating these features and capabilities from AI Mode into the core Search experience in AI Overviews. AI Mode and AI Overviews in the U.S. use a custom version of Gemini 2.5.
AI Mode will also use Deep Search functionality, letting you ask even more profound questions, issue hundreds of searches, and offer expert-level, fully cited reports.
AI Mode is also implemented in the Google Shopping experience. You can tell AI Mode you’re looking for a travel bag, and it will look for a browsable panel of images and product listings personalized to your tastes. You can narrow your options by saying you’re looking for a bag for a trip to Toronto in April, and AI Mode would start looking for bags that are good for rainy weather, suggesting waterproof options.
With its new virtual try-on technology, Google is also using AI to let you try on clothes. You can upload a photo and Google will use its technology, which understands the human body, and different materials and try on the clothes, letting you see how the clothes look on you.
