Google is working on an innovation for Android in the car that will make it easier to listen to all types of content.
The tech giant has shown off a new mode for cars with built-in Android Automotive like GM’s newer cars and the Polestar models. This mode will switch between video and audio-only depending on whether your car is parked or driving.
The report comes from 9to5Google and states that Google is also on the verge of releasing video apps on traditional phone-based Android Auto that all people can use. In theory, Google could allow these video apps to adapt to your car’s movement in the same way.
However, since phones use their built-in accelerometers to detect movement, they’re less tuned into the inner mechanics of a car. Android Automotive cars are built into your car and can instantly tell when you shift into drive.
Google could get around this with some sort of digital toggle to get around, but then it would have to rely on people turning videos into audio-only streams before they start to drive. In most cases, the accelerometer should be enough, but there is a chance it might not work every time or on time.
