Montreal-based telecom Cogeco says its wireless service launch is “underway” and that it already has a cohort of users on the service.
The company shared the wireless update alongside its Q3 2024 financial results. Earlier this year, Cogeco shared that its Canadian wireless effort was “on track to go to market over the coming quarters,” and it looks like that was accurate.
Per the company’s announcement, it will expand wireless service into 12 Canadian markets “over the coming weeks.” These markets include seven areas in Quebec (Alma, Magog, Rimouski, Saint-Georges, Saint-Hyacinthe, Saint-Sauveur and Trois-Rivières) and five in Ontario (Brockville, Chatham, Cobourg, Cornwall and Welland).
Further, the company is planning a “full geographic deployment in the fall.”
As we learned previously, Cogeco will launch wireless services by leveraging Canada’s mobile virtual network (MVNO) framework. The MVNO framework allows wireless providers to offer services that run on top of the networks offered by incumbent players like Bell, Rogers, and Telus. Cogeco also signed a deal with Nova Scotia-based Eastlink in 2024.
It’ll be interesting to see how Cogeco’s wireless efforts evolve over the coming months as the company expands into new regions. More wireless players should put pressure on wireless prices, and will hopefully provide Canadians with more access to cheaper wireless plans. It’s sorely needed, as we’ve seen in just the last couple of weeks carriers like Rogers raise plan prices, connection fees, roaming rates, and more.
