In an effort to retain customers, Bell is sending out codes for a free year of Perplexity Pro, an AI tool like ChatGPT.
The company’s press release says that eligible mobile and home internet customers will get a year of free Perplexity Pro. Bell says that mobile customers will start to receive redemption codes in the coming days, while home internet users will need to wait until the fall. The codes are being sent via text/email and will appear in your MyBell account portal.
It’s also worth noting that Bell says Perplexity Pro is valued at “nearly $300” in its press release, but the actual cost varies depending on where you buy it. Direct from Perplexity, a Pro subscription costs US$200 (about C$275). If you subscribe through the Android app, it costs about C$270, while on iOS, it costs C$250.
When customers reach the end of their free year of Perplexity Pro, the AI company will reach out to them and offer to keep their account going if they pay for it themselves, billed through Perplexity. If they opt not to pay, they’ll move down to the free tier of the AI tool. Bell isn’t collecting any payments from customers around this promotion.
Bell’s recently announced investments in Canadian data centres for AI are also notable.
If you’re thinking of signing up for a Bell plan to get a Perplexity Pro code, we’re not sure we’d recommend it right now. Bell’s $70 and $80 wireless plans still limit video streaming to standard definition, and there are lower-cost plans from Freedom and Public Mobile that you could sign up for and save enough money to get Perplexity Pro yourself. For instance, Public Mobile’s $40 plan has 60GB of 5G data and will only cost you $480 annually. The lowest cost Bell plan, which comes with Perplexity Pro, will cost $840.
